Studying Lenins contribution elicits questions that lead us to understand better the Russian Revolution and our own revolution, said Gladys Gutiérrez, national president of the Federation of University Students of Cuba. She pointed out that Cubans of her generationshe was born in 1985had never known a world in which the Soviet Union even existed. Her only reference point for a socialist revolution has been the Cuban Revolution.
Diosmedes Otero spoke on behalf of the four volunteers who in the mid-1990s, as young faculty members at the University of Matanzas, worked together to check the standard Spanish translations of the material being prepared for the first Pathfinder edition of
La última lucha de Lenin
. Otero described how the four went about carefully checking the translation and discussing their work until they were satisfied they had achieved the most accurate translation, not just the words but the spirit of what Lenin said.
The panel also included Fernando Martínez Heredia, recipient of Cuba’s 2006 National Social Sciences Award and today the director of the Juan Marinello Center for Research on Cuban Culture. Today, he concluded, “Lenin continues to help us more and more in the vital task of defending and deepening socialism.”
A presentation on
La última lucha de Lenin
was also given by Waters at Havana’s main university of science and engineering, the Instituto Superior Politécnico (Higher Polytechnic Institute) “José Antonio Echeverría,” popularly known here as CUJAE. The University of Havana’s Department of Philosophy and History organized a similar program February 22.
The Havana book fair is Cuba’s largest cultural festival and draws hundreds of thousands of visitors from Havana as well as across the island. Pathfinder Press has participated in the annual book fair for over twenty-five years.
