Chinese-language Newspaper on Event for Our History Is Still Being Written

The San Francisco Chinese-language daily Ming Pao published this report on a program sponsored September 9 by the Chinese Historical Society of America together with Pathfinder Press and Eastwind Books on Pathfinder's new book about three Chinese-Cuban generals in the Cuban Revolution.

Below is a translation of the September 10 Ming Pao article that appears in Chinese at right.

The Story of Chinese-Cuban Generals Book Signing Held in San Francisco Chinatown
Mary-Alice Waters introduced her new book, Our History Is Still Being Written, The Story of Three Chinese-Cuban Generals in the Cuban Revolution, yesterday at a panel discussion at the Gordon Lau Elementary School in San Francisco's Chinatown. The event attracted some 200 San Francisco readers.

Mary-Alice Waters, the author/editor introduced her new book along with a panel of three distinguished speakers: Dr. Ling-chi Wang, Ms. Felicia Lowe, and Steve Wake. After the meeting they walked across the street to the Chinese Historical Society for book-signing activities.

According to Mary-Alice Waters, it was during her conversations with the generals that she came to know about the less known but important history regarding overseas Chinese in Cuba. She was introduced to the three Chinese-Cuban generals; that's the birth of this book.

The book talks about the Chinese-Cuban participation in the Cuban war for independence and the 1959 Cuban Revolution, their participation in the struggle against the South African apartheid system, and about Chinese-Cuban participation in cleaning up pollution in Havana Bay.

The book also talks about the cooperation between Cuba and Venezuela in community development of small scale urban agriculture.
