New Pathfinder Press Book at the ASALH Conference
JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA—Nearly 1000 scholars, teachers, activists, and government workers attended the Association for the Study of African American Life and History here September 20-24, 2023. Organizers decided not to be deterred by new Florida laws restricting the teaching of African American history and the banning of books in the schools and libraries.

Lively discussions were held at the Pathfinder Press booth on the roots of capitalism’s expanding economic, social, and moral crisis. Volunteers introduced participants to Pathfinder’s newest title, The Low Point of Labor Resistance Is Behind Us: The Socialist Workers Party Looks Forward by Jack Barnes, Mary-Alice Waters and Steve Clark.

Workshops took up a wide range of topics including real struggles like the Montgomery Bus Boycott, Freedom Riders, Black Student Resistance, and more.

About 200 people attended a community event - a “Banned Book Readout” where ASALH members and authors read from banned books challenging Florida laws attacking First Amendment rights.
