Fernando González (1963– ) is one of the Cuban revolutionaries known as the Cuban Five. He was an Internationalist combatant in Angola 1987–89, and was awarded combat medals.
In early 1990s, he volunteered to live in South Florida, monitoring counterrevolutionary groups organizing attacks on Cuba.
González was arrested in 1998 and convicted in a 2001 frame-up trial of being an “unregistered foreign agent” and other charges. On February 27, 2014, after serving his entire sentence of nearly 15 and a half years, González was released from US federal prison and returned to Cuba as a Hero of the Revolution. He serves as president of the Cuban Institute for Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP).
