René González
René González (1956– ) is one of the Cuban revolutionaries known as the Cuban Five. René González (1956– ) is one of the Cuban revolutionaries known as the Cuban Five. He was active in Union of Young Communists, an internationalist combatant in Angola 1977–79, and decorated for bravery.
In early 1990s, he volunteered to live in South Florida, monitoring counterrevolutionary groups organizing attacks on Cuba.
González was arrested in 1998 and convicted in a 2001 frame-up trial of being an “unregistered foreign agent” and other charges. Sentenced to 19 years in prison, reduced in December 2009 to 17 years and nine months. On October 7, 2011, he was released on supervised parole. In May 2013, after an international defense campaign, he returned to Cuba and reunited with his wife and daughters.
