Fred Halstead (1927–1988) joined the Socialist Workers Party in 1948 and was a member of its National Committee for more than 30 years. He was the party’s candidate for US president in 1968. A garment cutter by trade, he had been a member of the Sailors Union of the Pacific, United Auto Workers, and International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union. A frequent contributor to the Militant newsweekly, he was the author of Out Now! A Participant’s Account of the Movement in the United States against the Vietnam War (1978) and The 1985–86 Meat-Packers Strike in Austin, Minnesota (1986).
