In early 1990s, he volunteered to live in South Florida, monitoring counterrevolutionary groups organizing attacks on Cuba. He was arrested in 1998 and convicted in a 2001 frame-up trial of being an "unregistered foreign agent" and other charges. In February 2014, after serving 15 and a half years, González was released and returned to Cuba, where he became president of the Cuban Institute for Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP).
