Gerardo Hernández (1965– ) is one of the Cuban revolutionaries known as the Cuban Five. In 1989 Hernández graduated from Cuba’s Institute for Advanced Study of International Relations. He was an internationalist combatant in Angola 1989–90 and was decorated for combat missions.
In early 1990s, he volunteered to live in South Florida, monitoring counterrevolutionary groups organizing attacks on Cuba. Arrested 1998; framed up and convicted 2001 of “espionage conspiracy” and other charges, sentenced to two life terms plus 15 years. In December 2014, after an international defense campaign, he was released from US federal prison and returned to Cuba.
