Gerardo Hernández (1965– ), national coordinator of Cuba's Committees for the Defense of the Revolution from December 2020. An internationalist combatant in Angola from 1989–90, Hernández is one of the revolutionaries known as the Cuban Five. In the early 1990s, he volunteered to live in South Florida, monitoring counterrevolutionary groups organizing attacks on Cuba. Arrested 1998, he was framed up and convicted 2001 of "conspiracy to commit espionage" and other charges. He was sentenced to two life terms plus 15 years. In December 2014, after an international defense campaign, he was released and returned to Cuba. His writings include:
